A look at Minnesota trees

From the towering pines of the Northwoods to the vibrant maples of the Metro area, Minnesota has a wide variety of trees that are important to the ecosystem and beloved by residents and visitors alike.

One of the most iconic trees in Minnesota is the state tree, the Norway Pine (Pinus resinosa). This majestic evergreen can grow up to 100 feet tall and is commonly found in the northern part of the state. Its thick, sturdy branches and long needles make it a popular choice for Christmas trees and it is also commonly used for lumber.

Another popular tree in Minnesota is the Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum), which is known for its beautiful fall colors. In the autumn, the leaves turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow, creating a stunning landscape. The Sugar Maple is also important for its sap, which is used to make maple syrup.

The Red Oak (Quercus rubra) is another important tree in Minnesota. It is a hardwood tree that can grow up to 90 feet tall and is known for its strong, durable wood. Red Oaks provide important habitat for wildlife and are also important for their role in filtering water and air.

Minnesota is also home to a variety of fruit trees, including apple, cherry, and plum trees. These trees not only provide delicious fruit, but also add beauty to the landscape with their colorful blossoms in the spring.
